5 Mind-Friendly Spa Treatments

It is good for people to undertake different measures to develop improved mental habits that will strengthen their intellect. One of the most recent developments is the prediction by the Inter Continental Hotels Group that ‘brain spas’ or places where commuters desire to learn much will determine their destination choices. They asserted that the market for services and products following the latest demand mind friendly spa treatments will grow between one and five billion by 2015.

It is essential to keep the mind alert and healthy particularly in the current hyper-informational and over stimulated environment. With regard to this, here are the five brain friendly sap treatments to enhance your mental health.

• Meditation - This refers to focusing the mind in a certain way. The benefits of meditation are endless. Some of the benefits it brings include calming and quieting the mind, relaxing the body, honing the use of your mental skills in performing tasks like focusing your attention on one object for a longer duration. It also helps to create the state of pure awareness of sensations, emotions and thoughts without reacting. Research from the University of Pennsylvania shows that long-term meditators display exceptionally higher cerebral blood flow within their brain structures linked to emotion, attention and more.

• Ayurveda - This name means the science of life and its goal is to attain optimal health at all levels, including the physical, spiritual and mental levels, though use of techniques and theories that incorporate exercise, herbal medicine, diet, massage and meditation. Former pilot studies indicated that this science creates positive results for depression, alzheimer’s, anxiety and Parkinson, among others. Some spas like the Raj located in Iowa have programs that help to avert the onset of age-associated cognitive ailments such as memory loss and Alzheimer’s.

It is an extensive program in conjunction with the Brain Research Institute director – Alarik Arenander, Ph.D. It entails the evaluation by a health consultant through the use of pulse diagnosis, health education classes, Maharishi rejuvenation treatments, fitness activities, informative lectures and cooking classes.

• Vibration/Music/Light/Sound and Color Therapy - In stimulating the mind, the forces of light, color, sound and music can create a huge impact on energy levels, mood change and relaxation. The scientific explanation on how vibrations and frequencies affect people both emotionally and physically is immense. There are various treatments like the Tibetan sound massage, singing bowls and the Kohler’s Vibra Acoustic baths, where sound waves move through the water and become choreographed to chromotherapy and music.

The other treatment is Taiz Sensorium that integrates vibrational medicine, gentle human touch, music therapy and aromatic oils. The last one is Shuniya sound therapy that entails a healing ceremony, which infuses vibration and sound though the Tibetan bowls, gong baths, Kundalini Yoga and turning forks coupled with Thai massage, shiatsu and Chi nei tsang.

• Exercise - Studies show that less than a third of the Americans meet the least recommendations for physical exercises. This research is worrying since engaging in any exercise like hiking, tai chai, walking and yoga can greatly help to strengthen your mind.

• Sleep Therapy - This one helps to rest your mind. Although this is not a common spa treatment surrounding us make it hard for most people to give good rest to their minds. In fact, the average adult sleeps for less than 7 hours per night yet research suggests 7 to 8 of sleep time. Insufficient sleep is associated with heart disorders, hypertension and cancer apart from memory problems.

Below we offer some input for older adults in need of an assisted living community that's right for their interests and retirement goals.Assisted Living

First and foremost, be honest with yourself and make the decisions that matter the most to you. Start by making a checklist of the qualities and features of the ideal assisted living facility that can offer you the support you need while remaining independent at the same time. Compare some of the qualities you write in your checklist, and see if any of the ideas below can further help shape your decision.

Consider the Level of Personal Care

When choosing an assisted living community, consider how they regard personal care. Ask questions around this topic and observe the general condition of the current residents as you tour different facilities.

The level of cleanliness and care offered will be evident from the current residents. Are they well groomed? Are their nails done? Are they appropriately dressed? Be sure to also discuss bathing options and other personalized care preferences. Observe how the staff treat the residents as well.

Consider The Community's Security and Safety

Safety and security is an important aspect to consider when it comes to choosing a senior assisted living community to settle in. It offers peace of mind not only to you as a resident, but also the caregiver. Be sure to ask questions on security.

How do the residents contact caregivers in the event of an emergency? Does the facility have an emergency center or registered nurses on site? Be sure to ask about the staffing pattern of the caregivers. Find out about the availability of safety features such as the accessibility of bathrooms, and grab bars in convenient places. Don’t fail to ask any other relevant safety and security questions.

Do They Hold Events and Social Activities

The regular events and activities held in a social living facility are very crucial to promoting social interaction among the senior residents. Find out if the facility offers regular community activities and events. The best way to experience and access the events organized is to schedule your visit or tour on the day they hold any community event.

Ask the manager to let you participate or simply watch. Consider the attendance of the events. Go through the calendar of events. Do the events vary in theme, nature, interest and size? Do they include “away” activities and outings? What about religious themed functions and services? Consider as well, if the staff seem to enjoy the events.

Do You Need Therapy Services

Assisted living communities that offer skilled therapy services are best for very elderly individuals in need of rehabilitation and recovery to be guided into better living. Consider if the facility has therapy services for such concerns.

What therapy services are available? Do they have art therapy? Art forms a better part of human beings. Making and enjoying art is a uniquely beneficial aspect of healthy living for seniors.

Trust Your Instincts

The Amazing Health Benefits of Massage Therapy

Massage TherapyStudy after study, it has been proven that massage therapy actually works. As a matter of fact the health benefits of massage therapy go beyond soothing muscle pains and aches. If you’ve not been visiting spas for a massage session, it’s about time you considered making massage appointments part and parcel of your wellness plan due to the following health benefits;

Stress Relief

Research has shown that massage lowers the heart rate and blood pressure which in effect increases the production of endorphins also known as the “feel good” chemical. In addition, chemicals known to as serotonin and dopamine are released through massage, bringing about a feeling of calm relaxation. All these factors combined make it easy to overcome chronic, habitual and acute as well as short term stress.

Improvement of Post Operative Surgical Operation

The rehabilitation recovery process is an important phase after surgical procedure. It is during this phase that that your body gets accustomed to natural movements again. The free movement of tissues is reinforced during this time as well. Studies show that patients who embark on a regular massage regimen after a surgical procedure are able to rehabilitate their bodies much faster than those who don’t. Basically, massage helps increase blood circulation thereby bringing nutrients to the affected tissue for speedy repair.

Tension and Headaches Relief

It’s estimated that more than 3 million people suffer from chronic headaches and migraines in the US alone. This is a disorder mostly associated with high levels of stress combined with lack of sleep. Massage therapy carried out on a regular basis can help the body maintain an optimal level of relaxation thus lowering the odds of migraine attack and tension. This is achieved by relaxing muscle spasms and trigger points.

Promotion of Deeper and Easier Breathing

It has been said that one of the telltale signs of anxiety is constricted breathing. When you take shallow, short breaths than what would be regarded as normal, it’s almost impossible to get to a relaxed state. Constricted breathing is partly caused by the tightening of the muscles around the abdomen and the rib cage. Regular massage helps train your body how to relax and enhance breathing which by extension improves respiratory conditions such as allergies, asthma and sinus problems as well as bronchitis.

Improvement of Flexibility

Injuries are more common these days than they were 5 decades ago. Some quarters argue that this is brought about by our tendency of being sedentary. As if that’s not enough, the current generation has joints that are more or less rigid which greatly impedes flexibility and range of motion. However motion and flexibility can be improved and maintained through massage therapy. Your muscles, tendons, connective tissues, joints and ligaments become more fluid and less prone to injuries when you work on them regularly.

Great massage therapy has no geographical limitations. Whether you're seeking a professional massage therapist in Peoria, IL or perhaps need a sports massage in Bloomington, IL Massage therapy can be an incredible addition to your healthcare regimen. Bearing in mind that many diseases are stress related, nothing can come in handy than regular appointments at the massage parlor. Just because massage sounds more like a luxury than a necessity doesn't in any way make it less therapeutic. In this fast paced world, the need to eliminate anxiety and pressure cannot be over emphasized.

Five Ways Massage Therapy Can Improve Your Health

Massage therapy is beneficial to your body in numerous ways. In order to have a healthy body the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and other body systems must function correctly. Relying on massage, your body can benefit in many different ways such as:

Improve Mobility & Flexibility

Massage is the best therapy for people who spend long hours standing, sitting or lifting heavy objects. Such people usually end up with back pain, stiff neck, tense shoulders and other symptoms that affect their mobility and flexibility. Regular massage therapy could be very helpful to dissipate stiffness and pain in your muscles. Professional sports men, dancers and models require constant massage to maintain their fitness and improve their health.

In case you are suffering from arthritis or diabetes which tends to inflame your joints, massage therapy can help to relax the muscles around your joints, increase the flow of blood to the joints, reduce pain and enhance mobility and flexibility.

Relax, Unwind, & Minimize Stress Levels

Massage is a form of bodywork that affects you physically, emotionally and physiologically. It helps to relax your body by removing strain in your muscles hence reducing your stress levels. You can unwind through massage since it’s a fun and relaxing activity. Chronic stress is risky as it wears your body over time leading to premature aging. Stress relief massage techniques relieve anxiety, make you aware of your stress condition and give you a chance to change your lifestyle.

Enhance Relationships

Choosing couples massage is a fun filled experience and a great way to share something new with someone you care about dearly. The massage activity can be designed to produce an intimate and romantic experience that will help the couple bond. Couples in a strained relationship take advantage of a couple’s massage where they will relax, communicate openly and put their relationship back on track.

Recovery from Soft Tissue Injuries

Massage helps in recovery from various soft tissue injuries such as strain and sprain. Massage accelerates growth and repair of tissues in the affected areas by improving circulation of blood to such parts of the body. The best form of this kind of massage is orthopedic massage; it requires advanced training and entails three stages to heal an injury. The first stage, the acute stage, is for reducing inflammation from a sprain. The second stage, sub-acute, is for increasing circulation and healing in the area and the third stage, chronic stage, is for softening tissue scar, re-aligning muscles and managing any present pain.

Constipation Relief

Massage of the abdominal area helps to tone the muscles in your colon area. When done regularly, your colon walls will become firm and the stagnant chime that is causing constipation will loosen. The exercise is easy since you can do it in the shower with soap or while lying on the bed with oil. Put soap or oil in your hand and make small circular movements around your abdomen, appendix and up and down your rib cage. You can do the massage a few minutes each day for two weeks until the constipation subsides.

In conclusion, getting a massage regularly can greatly improve your health, overall well being, and help you enjoy life.

The Origin & Science Behind Massage Therapy

Massage TherapyMassage Therapy is the physical manipulation, or rubbing of the muscles and soft tissues to improve one’s health and comfort. Referenced in various medical texts, it is recognized as one of the oldest methods of healing and restoration dating back nearly 4,000 years.

In the 4th century B.C. the “father of medicine”, Hippocrates, mentioned massage saying, “The physician must be acquainted with many things, and assuredly with rubbing.” This rubbing massage technique is also known today as bodywork or somatic therapy. In addition to rubbing other variations of massage therapy include, vibration, applying a steady movable pressure, friction, kneading, rocking, and compression with the hands.

Different Types of Massage

Here is a list of the most common types of massage:

  • Trigger Point Massage - This massage focuses on tight muscle fibers that occur after injuries or overuse of muscles.
  • Deep Massage - This technique uses more forceful, slower movements to get to the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It’s mainly used for people with muscle injuries.
  • Swedish Massage - long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping are used in this type of massage to help you relax and get energized.
  • Sports Massage - This method is very similar to Swedish massage but it’s geared toward people involved in sports to help prevent or treat injuries.

How Does it Relieves Muscles on a Biological Level

The different methods involved are all used to benefit the musculoskeletal, circulatory-lymphatic, nervous, and other systems of the body. These systems affect the daily quality of life so it’s important to use massage therapy to promote healing and recovery, and also reduce inflammation and muscular pain.

It’s important that scientist validate the benefits of massage therapy and to do that they need to look at what it does on a biological level. Studies show that after a tough workout, massage therapy helped to reduce the production of inflammatory cytokines. However, the massaged promoted mitochondrial biogenesis, which lead to enhanced recovery. Contrary to popular believe, massage therapy does not clear lactic acid from the tissue and glycogen levels do not change.

The Ultimate Stress Reliever

Massage therapy has been known to reduce stress on a physical and psychological level. After a study on the effect of trigger point therapy there was a great decrease in heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure. After a 10 to 15 min massage, measures of blood pressure, oxygen consumption, and salivary cortisol levels were all lower.

Here is a list of things massage therapy can help relieve:

  • Tired eyes
  • Headaches tension
  • Relax the hand
  • Neck tension
  • Tight shoulders
  • Lower back pain
  • Tired feet
  • Anxiety
  • Digestive disorders
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia from stress
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Paresthesias and nerve pain
  • Soft tissue strains or injuries
  • Sports injuries
  • Temporomandibular joint pain

Massage TherapistMassage therapy doesn’t just help physical conditions and illnesses. It can also promote relaxation and peace of mind.

It’s important to talk to your doctor to see if finding a local massage therapist in Bloomington, IL is right for you. You should also seek massage therapy from professionals if you wish to try it because of serious problems that could occur from receiving it from someone who doesn’t understand what it does to the inside of the body.

5 Ways to Increase Soft Tissue Mobility & Range of Motion

Soft Tissue MobilityIf you regularly participate in some kind of sporting activity, then some form of soft tissue damage seems almost inevitable. Eventually, most people take a particularly hard knock, or land too hard on a knee or ankle, or just overstress their muscles for too long without allowing adequate rest periods for recovery.

Soft tissue damage can haunt you for years, causing near-constant pain that many athletes and sports enthusiasts just learn to ignore, or dull with painkillers. This does not need to be the way! With a bit of work, soft tissue damage can almost always be repaired. You can have your muscle mobility and full range of motion back! Here are five simple tips to help repair your soft tissue damage:

Get a professional sports massage

Many athletes are already using sports massages to remove built up lactic acid from their muscles. This greatly shortens recovery time, allowing athletes to go into their next event feeling fresh, and be able to push that little bit harder. The same principles can be used to help your soft tissue injuries. In the interest of full disclosure, I should warn you that this is going to hurt. A lot. But the positive effects of sports and deep tissue massage therapy will be more than worth the pain.

Massage yourself with specialized tools

This is the massage option, but without the massage price tag. You can pick up (or make yourself) purpose built foam rollers or balls. (I'm told that you can also just repurpose a lacrosse ball) There are plenty of videos on the internet detailing how to use these tools effectively to help combat the effects of soft tissue damage, so I'm not going to go into the specifics of how to do it here.

As with the massage option above, this option is going to hurt. The first time that you use a foam roller, you are going to think to yourself "This can't be right. Nothing that hurts this much could possibly be helping!" but you will be wrong. Stick with it, and you will find yourself pain-free in no time.

Stretch

One of the easiest ways to increase flexibility and range of motion in soft tissue is to stretch. This is different to the short, dynamic stretches that you perform before a workout or sports match. To permanently increase range of motion, a stretch should last as much as twenty minutes. This is something that you can do in your downtime.

If you're sitting around with the family in the evening watching a two hour movie, you should see that as an opportunity to perform six different stretches for increasing your flexibility. Again, the internet has already done a much better job of detailing which stretches are most effective that I could ever do here, so I won't try to cover it.

Try a Yin Yoga class

Yin Yoga has much of the same benefits of the stretching program above, except that Yin Yoga classes are taught by professionals who can critique your performance and offer tips for helping to restore your specific soft tissue injury. Yin Yoga is a slow moving yoga style, where each position is held for an extended period of time.

This is an ideal way to increase mobility and range of motion. Yin Yoga classes are available across most of North America and Europe, but if you live elsewhere, it is still worth searching for a local Yoga class.

Physiotherapy

When nothing else works, go to the professionals. Physiotherapists are highly trained in repair of soft tissue injuries, and they will design you a customized recovery program. It is very likely that they will want you to come back once a week or once a fortnight until you have made a full recovery from your injury. During these meetings, they will test your mobility levels, and adjust your recovery program accordingly.

With all of these options readily available, there is just no need for soft tissue injury to control your life anymore. Get your mobility back. Get pain free. There is no excuse not to!

How the Top Chiropractors Are Redefining Their Practice

Chiropractor for Spinal HealthLike most healthcare specialists, there are defining factors common among highly-rated and professionally-recognized chiropractors.

Aside from simple characteristics that make a chiropractor desirable to the community (i.e. personalized attention, mindfulness, respect, etc.,) there are other more definitive qualities that reflect top chiropractors who are redefining (of have redefined) their practice.

Adopting New Chiropractic Technologies

One of the most common characteristics among top chiropractors are those who research and adopt the latest chiropractic technologies that suit their overall approach and patient needs.

Such technologies are not just chiropractic-related, or specific to spine health, but also universal systems that are applicable for many situations that benefit from precise diagnoses/prognoses and advanced pain relief.Class IV K-Laser

A good example is the class IV K-Laser therapy that's being adopted by several top chiropractors. The K-Laser is harmless tool that promotes rapid cellular regeneration and tissue rebuilding.

Among them is Dr. Mik Hamilton, a pioneering chiropractor in Berkeley, CA with over 40 years of experience evolving the best practices in spine and postural correction.

Dr. Hamilton Berkeley Chiropractor Laser Therapy

Since acquiring the K-Laser, Dr. Hamilton has helped many of his current patients accelerate healing in problematic areas. Many new patients have come to his chiropractic office seeking this particular laser treatment, as it's becoming well-known for its healing effectiveness in countless ailments involving hard and soft tissues, fascia, and ligaments around joints.

Developing Patient Programs That Promote Lasting Change

While some chiropractors center their practice (and overall business model) on quick-fix adjustments and frequent patient visits (which are a reaction to pain and symptoms,) some of the most reputable chiropractors are recognized by their proactive chiropractic programs that produce sustainable changes. While these more formal programs alleviate pain just as much as the quick-fix, the emphasis is long-term and gradual progress that enables patients to realize lasting results from treatment.

Pettibon System Chiropractor WeightsA great example of this approach is Pettibon System®, which was developed over 30 years from Dr. Burl Pettibon. In essence, the Pettibon System is comprehensive rehabilitation program that focuses on the spine's hard and soft tissues to help patients achieve an ideal spine position.

This unique and highly-effective chiropractic system uses a wide spectrum of tools and modalities spanning from standard spinal manipulations to using body weights on patients to correct spinal displacement. To learn more, visit the official website of the Pettibon System.

These are just a couple aspects that truly define today's chiropractors who yield outstanding patient outcomes. Do you know a chiropractor who is redefining their practice by being a proponent of change in the healthcare community? Let us know is the comments section below.

Short-term vs. Long-term Chiropractic Care: Which Is Best For You?

ChiropractorChoosing to receive professional chiropractic care to help heal injuries or correct spinal issues is a great, holistic approach that's highly effective for many individuals. However, before you jump on any chiropractor's table, there are some things you should take into consideration, such as whether you are going to be receiving short-term or long-term care.

Both approaches to chiropractic care have specific intentions, but it just depends on what type of injury or ailment you have, the severity of the ailment, and your commitment to attend the regular appointments needed for recovery.

Pro's & Con's of Short-term Chiropractic Treatment

If you determine short-term chiropractic care to be the best option for your situation, it is important you know the advantages and disadvantages. Advantages of short-term care include limited amount of appointments. With only a few appointments necessary, you will not miss out on too many days of work. It is also more cost efficient especially if your heath care provider is not going to be able to cover the expenses of the treatment.

For a routine back spasm or neck tightness, a short-term care plan may be a good idea if the problem can be solved within a reasonable amount of time and with little complications. This ultimately depends on your unique situation, and what your chiropractor recommends.

With these types of chiropractic treatments, you should be aware of the disadvantages as well. Sometimes with a short-term treatment a “quick fix” is not always the best plan of action in the long run. It may work for now, but you could be feeling the pain for weeks to come, sometimes they can actually do more damage than good.

Receiving quick adjustments to relieve the immediate pain and enduring reactionary pain is something to think about before making the decision to go with short-term adjustments.

Pro's & Con's of Long-term Chiropractic Treatment

Long-term chiropractic care, on the other hand, involves returning consistently to receive regular adjustments and checkups. This sort of chiropractic care usually lasts anywhere between 4 and 12 weeks, if not longer depending on the case.

During this time period the chiropractor will assess specific problem areas and make calculated adjustments based on solving and correcting the injury. This type of treatment is good for severe, moderate or more complex spinal injuries. Having a good chiropractor can health you cover the expenses involving long-term chiropractic care.

The downside to this version of the treatment is that it will usually require some downtime from work. The length of your individual treatment program is determined by the complexity of you spinal injury. You will need to return for multiple adjustments over a predetermined amount of time.

This involves being dedicated to healing yourself. If you are not sure if you will be able to work with making regular appointments to see the chiropractor, this may not be the method for you, especially if you already have a busy schedule. Abruptly stopping the treatment can leave you with lasting problems that persist for weeks or longer.

Since long-term chiropractic treatment involves examining the body to find exact problem areas determining exactly where the pain is, and then making calculated adjustments over an extended period of time, it is the safer and more practical way of the two. There are few risks involving this option and it allows the body ample time to adjust to the treatment methods your chiropractor will use to help you get better.
