Considering Taking Up Triathlon?

If you’re taking an interest in endurance sports, but dread the monotony of performing the same arduous activity day in and day out, the multi-sport of triathlon be your niche.

Many people, whether to lose weight or improve cardiovascular health, jump right into sports like running and cycling, only to drop out after a month of growing boredom. There is no doubt that doing the same sport on consistent basis can get a little old. However with triathlon, there are three sports in which you can enjoy and get better at.

But what’s more than just getting in shape via swimming, biking, and running, is the outcome and personal development you can gain from triathlon. Taking on three sports takes dedication, preparation, and effort. Triathletes are often health-minded and highly-driven individuals, and those characteristics often reflect their complete lifestyle.

Why Tri?

Participating in swimming, biking, and running can surely get you into top shape. All three sports work various muscle groups and all require a fair degree of strength and cardiovascular effort. Furthermore, each sport offers its own advantages compared to the others.

Some triathletes are prone to impact activities, such as running. Although they will still run on occasion (such as during races or during training periods,) this breed will typically focus more on swimming and biking, which are low impact sports. Conversely, some individuals don’t have access to a pool or lake. These triathletes will often emphasize their training around the biking and running aspects of the sport.

The flexibility of triathlon gives health-minded individuals the opportunity to mix up their training regime. This can help ward off boredom from doing the same exercises and activity over and over. Regardless of whether or not you planning to do a race, involving yourself in the three disciplines of triathlon can help you become a greater individual.

Triathlon for Health

Considering Taking Up TriathlonThe sport of triathlon also contributes to great sense of well-being, both mentally and physically. The physical aspects are obvious, for the three sports of triathlon involve a great deal of coordination and energy expenditure. An often overlooked benefit of the multi-sport is the mental health benefits.

Triathlon, particular for those involved with racing, requires a significant amount of organization and preparation. From building training schedule to planning out meals and nutrition, the indirect aspects of the sport are major factors to being mentally healthy. The typical triathlete is usually a very conscious person, in that he or she is usually well aware of one’s diet, feelings and emotions, and overall lifestyle choices.

Endurance sports naturally make humans feel good. The endorphin release during and after a solid work-out promotes optimism and greater sense of presence. These emotions reflect the rest of the day, and thus can enhance our way of life.

How Massages Can Promote Greater Health and Well-Being

MassageMassage therapy has several health benefits. It can help mentally, emotionally and physically, if you make it part of your regular health routine. Whether you receive a Swedish massage, a sports massage, a deep-tissue massage, or a trigger point massage, the health benefits are almost the same.

Usually, individuals use massage for either overall relaxation, well-being, or to address a particular grievance, for instance pain or restricted range of motion. Studies suggest that a massage therapy may contribute to both objectives.

Massage causes physical changes in your body through:

  • The relaxation response, which is a spontaneous, yet foreseeable reaction of the nervous system to massage procedures and touch
  • Mechanical responses, which are physical reaction that takes place in the body when pressure is applied to the soft tissues

These responses can together produce both physical and emotional benefits.

The Relaxation Response

When getting a professional massage treatment, a gentle touch makes the body to relax. This, plus pain relief, generally produces a relaxation effect.

This is a state in which both the heart beat and breathing rate slows down, the blood pressure goes down, the production of stress hormones drops, and the muscles relaxes. This response also increases the existing level of serotonin, which is a chemical in the body that affects emotions and thoughts in a positive way.

This response may lessen the physical effects of stress and decrease the dangers related to stress, for instance hypertension, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, anxiety and digestive disorders among others.

The Mechanical Response

The physical handling in massage has two main physical effects:

  • Easing and normalization of the soft tissue, which releases nerves and deeper connective tissues
  • Increase in blood circulation

Massage therapy relaxes muscle tissue, which lessens excruciating contractions. If you are an athlete and you happen to pull a muscle that had not been warmed up well or you overstretch it, a deep tissue sports massage can ease the resulting soreness. It also reduces recovery period, helps you get ready for vigorous exercises and prevents any future pains.

Massage can also lessen nerve compression. When muscles are contracted, they occasionally compress the nerves around them. However, when these muscles are relaxed, they release the nerves, allowing them to get correct nutrients and function more efficiently. The nerves can take up their usual work of conveying messages to and from the brain thus improving the effectiveness of the muscles and organs.

Massage is believed to boost blood and lymph circulation. This is perhaps caused by the physical handling of the soft tissues and the chemicals released during the relaxation process. Enhanced circulation improves the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to muscle cells and helps eliminate waste products. As cellular health improves, tissues function more efficiently, leading to the elimination of waste products. This may also increase the absorption of extra fluids and lessen swelling in soft tissues. These circulatory effects of massage may have importance in the treatment of a number of inflammatory diseases, for example arthritis and edema.

As you can see, there are some great benefits associated with getting a massage. Why not indulge yourself and help to ensure your well-being all at the same time? Incorporating regular massages into your life is not all that challenging, since they do not have to take too much time, and it is a great investment because it helps you to be the best that you can be.
