5 Must-Have Self Massage Tools for Athletes

Not all of us athletes can afford a professional massage treatment 2-3 days of the week. Heck, even just one massage per week would break the bank for many athletes.

Fortunately, there are a number of different self massage tools available that can help you get the same professional massage therapy you could get from a professional. These massage tools offer different purposes for various massage techniques. And when used in conjunction to relieve tight muscles, these tools can provide the ultimate massage experience.

1. Trigger Point's GRID foam roller massage tool foam roller

The Grid foam roller by Trigger Point is a hot favorite among athletes when it comes to massaging. This foam roller makes use of EVA foam over a hollow core and thus prevents breakdown with time. The varied foam densities, widths and patterns give a more targeted feel.

Trigger Point's GRID roller works by applying pressure to myofascial connective tissue to

restore motion and eliminate pain. Measuring 13” X 5”, the GRID roller is much more portable than conventional foam rollers. The one year warranty from the house of Trigger Point adds to the incentives of making it yours.

2. MobilityWOD Super Nova

The sphere shaped Super Nova has been redesigned and re-released in 2013. It works well by reaching more muscle groups due to its grooved flat surfaces. It is gentler than several other advanced mobility tools. The Super Nova stays where you want it to due to its grooved channels and fingers.

The portable size of MobilityWOD's Super Nova is one of the features which give it an edge above foam rollers. It can fit easily in a travel bag to cater for all your on-the-go mobility requirements. The spherical shape allows it to reach difficult-to-reach-areas also effectively.

3. The basic lacrosse ball massage tool

A portable massage tool that is as effective as any other fancy massage tool is a lacrosse ball. It is an excellent massage tool to activate trigger points in muscles and relax stressed areas by working deep into adhesion and muscle tightness.

A lacrosse ball can be used in the following ways for a myofascial release:

  • Roll over the ball with your feet over it to get instant relief from tight arches.
  • Rest the ball between glute and wall with the ball over the sore area. Press the glute into the wall and perform circular motion around the area. As the pain subsides, press the ball over the area against the wall and hold for 30 seconds.
  • Lie down on the stressed side with knees bent and hands resting on the floor in the front. Place the ball directly under the aching area and begin rolling the hips to ease the tension.

4. Knobble® II

Shaped like a round mushroom, the Knobble is a polymer massage tool that fits comfortably in the palm. Its ergonomic design makes it work like an extension of the hand itself. It weighs only 2 ounces and is about 2 ¼ inches long. All you need to alleviate pain and soreness is place the wide end of the Knobble II on the palm and the narrow end on the area of the body you want to massage. The tool comes with an instruction manual to guide you through the massage process.

The purpose of the Knobble II tool is to allow you to focus on the areas of the body where you need compression. It targets trigger points and acupoints and enables you to get intense massage with little effort. It magnifies the power of massage to give deep and effective strokes.

5. Thera Cane® massage tool cane

This is a general purpose massage tool which supplements your hands in carrying out a massage. It is primarily used for giving an effective and deep back massage by stimulating trigger points and acupoints. You can reach back, feet and front with this tool and massage effectively. Made of fiberglass and shaped like a cane, the Thera Cane has six knobs. The device is nearly 15 inches in width and 2 feet in length.

Life as an athlete would have been wonderful if you had a personal massage therapist at your disposal to help you ease out the stress, soreness and tension that you experience while performing your daily athletic activities. However, this is not possible for most of the athletes and it therefore becomes necessary that you have certain tools in your arsenal that can defeat pain and stress.

Is Too Much Screen Time Bad for Your Health?

Too Much Screen TimeThe phrase "screen time" denotes the activities that are done in front of a digital screen. Whether it be watching TV, working on the computer, playing video games, or using mobile phones and iPods, screen time is never a healthy endeavor (aside from learning something.) In fact, too much screen time, particularly in kids, can be bad for one's health.

Screen time is regarded as a sedentary time because very little energy is spent when you are physically inactive. Hence too much screen time combined with a sedentary lifestyle can definitely take a toll on your child’s overall well-being. Yes, excessive screen time, whether from the TV or iPod, can result in a wide array of problems – from physical conditions like obesity to mental issues like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Health Affects of Too Much Screen Time

So before you or kid overuses their computer or iPod beyond repair, be aware of some of the health side effects of too much screen time. Some of the following problems can associated with too much screen time.

1. Obesity: Various studies evidence that children who watch TV for more than two hours in a day are prone to be obese than others. This is because they sit inactive for hours, often snacking unhealthy food items. Obesity is dangerous as it is a major risk factor for numerous health problems. Moreover obesity in children can also lead to a feeling of isolation and inadequacy.

2. Irregular sleep patterns: Similarly a child who watches TV for more than two hours is likely to suffer from irregular sleep patterns accompanied by strange nightmares and dreams. If your child spends a lot of time playing games in the computer the self-luminous back lit display in the computer can cause the melatonin levels to drop making him/her difficult to sleep.

3. Behavioral problems: Viewing TV for more than two hours can lead to behavioral problems and poor social skills. Excessive watching of TV, or obsessively reaching for an iPod or smartphone, can also pave the way for anti-social behavior. Spending too much time in front of the computers can cause physical changes in the brain and lead to attention and behavioral issues. Too much video gaming can also permanently or temporarily deactivate certain nerves in the brain.

4. Impaired academic performance and less time for play: Excessive TV time has also been linked with other negative outcomes like poor academic performance and less physical play. Too much screen time leaves less time for creative and active play which is indispensable for the growth of the child.

5. Emotional problems: Too much time spent in front of the screen can cause emotional problems such as depression and anxiety in children. Moreover, children who spend more time in front of the TV or computer have reduced levels of self-worth, self-esteem and happiness.

6. Violence and fear: Exposure to excess doses of violence can also make them more aggressive and less sympathetic towards people. Excess TV viewing can also trigger feelings of fear when they watch scary things.

7. Other problems: Excessive use of phones and tablets can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome, eye strain, frequent headaches, neck pain and back pain too. Research studies also depict that too much computer time or sitting glued to the TV may also hurt your heart and shorten your life span.

To limit screen time it is best to keep TV’s and computers out of bedroom. Moreover children should not be allowed to eat in front of the screen as it can lead to mindless munching, which paves the way for obesity. Involving them in alternative activities can prevent them from spending too much time in front of the screen. Most of all we have to set a good example by restricting our screen time.

How Subluxation Can Negatively Impact Your Health

In simple terms, a subluxation or Vertebral Subluxation is a condition when one or multiple bones of the vertebrae or spine move out of proper position. In this condition, the spine either creates unnecessary pressure on spinal nerves or irritates them. These nerves are the ones that reach out from between each of the bones in the spine. The irritation or pressure on the spinal nerves causes those to malfunction. In addition to this, they also interfere with the numerous signals traveling through those nerves. subluxation

Familiarized by most professional chiropractors, a lot of people wonder how this condition affects the human body. It is important to understand that the nervous system coordinates and controls all the bodily functions. If there’s any interference to the signals traveling through the nerves, some body parts won’t get appropriate nerve messages. Thus, they won’t function at maximum capacity. In other words, it’s possible that some body parts cease to function properly. This is why professional chiropractic care can help.

How Does Subluxation Affect Your Health?

According to most chiropractors, there are two different stages by which your spinal nerves or spinal cord may be damaged after the trauma. In the beginning, you may experience primary tissue damage from:

  • Direct Mechanical Disruption.
  • Vascular and Biochemical Events

When the cellular membrane integrity in your body is disrupted, a wide range of biochemical reactions are initiated, including a major release of free radicals, toxic amino acids, oxygen free radicals, free fatty acids, vasoactive agents and more. Such complex membrane changes can cause intracellular potassium, calcium and sodium ion changes. They can affect the injured nerve, and make the condition severe.

On the other hand, when there is a significant decrease in the blood flow to damaged nerves because of direct mechanical compression from your subluxated vertebra, disc material or bone spur, it cause hemorrhage and vasospasm. This causes nerve ischemia, which can lead to axonal degeneration, cytotoxic edema, abnormal impulse transmission, cell death, demyelination, conduction block and other issues. All these problems can have a major impact on your health and quality of life. Fortunately, a professional chiropractor in Bloomington, IL can offer a sound solution.

How Can Advanced Chiropractors Help?

Chiropractic care is the best choice to find a cure for subluxation. Top Berkeley chiropractors always try to find the underlying cause of the problem. They focus on the misalignment of your vertebrae or spinal cord, and make sure it is properly aligned. With some manipulation techniques, an advanced chiropractic will be able to provide you with some relief, and cure this condition.

An advanced chiropractic applies a precisely and carefully directed pressure on your spine in a quick manner. This may be done by some special instrument or hand. With such techniques, the chiropractor can restore normal function and motion to your spine. This either reduces or eliminates the subluxation complex.

If you’ve been noticing any symptoms of Vertebral Subluxation Complex, chiropractic care will be your best help. A chiropractor will be able to resolve your problem without the use of harmful drugs or other treatments that may cause side effects. You just need to make sure you choose someone with a lot of experience.
