Choosing to receive professional chiropractic care to help heal injuries or correct spinal issues is a great, holistic approach that's highly effective for many individuals. However, before you jump on any chiropractor's table, there are some things you should take into consideration, such as whether you are going to be receiving short-term or long-term care.
Both approaches to chiropractic care have specific intentions, but it just depends on what type of injury or ailment you have, the severity of the ailment, and your commitment to attend the regular appointments needed for recovery.
If you determine short-term chiropractic care to be the best option for your situation, it is important you know the advantages and disadvantages. Advantages of short-term care include limited amount of appointments. With only a few appointments necessary, you will not miss out on too many days of work. It is also more cost efficient especially if your heath care provider is not going to be able to cover the expenses of the treatment.
For a routine back spasm or neck tightness, a short-term care plan may be a good idea if the problem can be solved within a reasonable amount of time and with little complications. This ultimately depends on your unique situation, and what your chiropractor recommends.
With these types of chiropractic treatments, you should be aware of the disadvantages as well. Sometimes with a short-term treatment a “quick fix” is not always the best plan of action in the long run. It may work for now, but you could be feeling the pain for weeks to come, sometimes they can actually do more damage than good.
Receiving quick adjustments to relieve the immediate pain and enduring reactionary pain is something to think about before making the decision to go with short-term adjustments.
Long-term chiropractic care, on the other hand, involves returning consistently to receive regular adjustments and checkups. This sort of chiropractic care usually lasts anywhere between 4 and 12 weeks, if not longer depending on the case.
During this time period the chiropractor will assess specific problem areas and make calculated adjustments based on solving and correcting the injury. This type of treatment is good for severe, moderate or more complex spinal injuries. Having a good chiropractor can health you cover the expenses involving long-term chiropractic care.
The downside to this version of the treatment is that it will usually require some downtime from work. The length of your individual treatment program is determined by the complexity of you spinal injury. You will need to return for multiple adjustments over a predetermined amount of time.
This involves being dedicated to healing yourself. If you are not sure if you will be able to work with making regular appointments to see the chiropractor, this may not be the method for you, especially if you already have a busy schedule. Abruptly stopping the treatment can leave you with lasting problems that persist for weeks or longer.
Since long-term chiropractic treatment involves examining the body to find exact problem areas determining exactly where the pain is, and then making calculated adjustments over an extended period of time, it is the safer and more practical way of the two. There are few risks involving this option and it allows the body ample time to adjust to the treatment methods your chiropractor will use to help you get better.
